Bishop-elect to be ordained, installed this afternoon

Bishop-elect Louis Kihneman III will be ordained and installed as the fourth bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi this afternoon at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral.

The ceremony, which is by invitation only, will begin at 2 p.m. and be broadcast live on cable TV’s EWTN and on WLOX. 

Kihneman, 65, was born in Lafayatte, La., and holds two college degrees: a bachelor of Liberal Arts and a master of Religious Education. 

Before Pope Francis named him as the new bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi, Kihneman served as pastor of St. Philip the Apostle Parish in Corpus Christi, Texas.

A public reception will be held at the Slavonian Lodge, 159 Maple Street, beginning at 5 p.m.

The 25th Annual Crawfish Music Festival takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. You’ll also find Chaka Khan performing at the Beau Rivage, Styx at the IP, and Morris Day & The Time at the Hard Rock. The 31st Annual Gorneflo’s Cobia Shoot Out  takes place on Saturday at Point Cadet Marina.

City seeks help in identifying 1950s sites, people

OK, your city needs your help. Who remembers the landmarks and people of 1950s Biloxi?

The City of Biloxi has acquired a half-hour U.S. Army documentary, “Social Change in a Democracy,” which was filmed in Biloxi in 1951, and help is needed in identifying people and places in the documentary.

Election news and notes

Voting machines: The City of Biloxi earlier this week conducted a state-mandated demonstration and test of the electronic voting tabulation machines that will be used at polling places in the municipal party primaries on Tuesday. Absentee voting: Biloxi City Hall will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon for absentee voting for the party primaries. Polling places for the party primaries, by the way, will be open from 7 a..m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Once the party select their nominees, voters will be asked to return to the polls on Tuesday, June 6 for the general election. Council meeting:  The Biloxi City Council will not meet on Tuesday because of municipal elections. The lineup of scheduled meetings for May is Tuesday, May 9 at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. and Tuesday, May 30 at 1:30 p.m., all at Biloxi City Hall.  To read more about the City Council, click here.
