Biloxi youth get a chance to experience local government firsthand

Biloxi got a new mayor, along with a new fire chief and public works director Tuesday, and citizens will even find new council members when the City Council meets tonight.

The new leaders were part of the Biloxi Elks Lodge 606’s “Youth in Government Day,” an annual project designed to acquaint future leaders with city government.

Students from Biloxi High, D’Iberville and Mercy Cross shadowed city officials throughout the day and will sit along side councilmembers during tonight’s City Council meeting.

“It is a joy to have the future leaders of our city participating in this very educational program,” said Mayor A.J. Holloway. “I would like to congratulate the Elks and the students for taking part in this project.”

Among the students and their positions:

  • Jonathan Wetzel: Mayor
  • Cecelia Lynn: Director of Community Development Department
  • Jynette Guerra: Director of Legal Department
  • Jeanne Marie Nourse: Public Affairs manager and Ward 1 councilmember
  • Brian Matherne: Director of Fire Department and Ward 2 councilmember
  • Jerrell Javier: Director of Public Works and Ward 3 councilmember
  • Drake Hunter: Director of Parks and Recreation and Ward 4 councilmember
  • Candace Lestrade: Human Resources manager and Ward 5 councilmember
