Biloxi to offer Start Smart program, swim lessons

The City of Biloxi Parks and Recreation Department has opened registration for the first 25 Start Smart Football Program participants. Registration is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Recreation Office, 380 Hiller Drive.

The program is open to children ages 3 to 5 and their parents or a responsible adult. Sessions begin on Tuesday, Aug. 26 and continue for five following Tuesdays, ending on Sept. 30. Each session will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Donal Snyder Community Center, 2520 Pass Road. Participation is free for Biloxi residents and $25 for non-Biloxi residents.

The Start Smart Program is a program that helps to prepare children for organized sports using Koosh products. This program teaches children basic football skills such as kicking, passing and catching, all of which are needed to play the sport.

City to conduct registration for fall swim lessons

The City of Biloxi Aquatic Division will hold its fall swim lesson registration for Biloxi residents on Friday, Aug. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. and for non-Biloxi residents on Saturday, Aug. 30 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Biloxi Community Center, 591 Howard Ave.

Classes will begin Monday, Sept. 8 with different sessions held throughout the fall. All classes will end on Thursday, Nov. 13.

The fall session will consist of four types of classes for different ages:

— IPAP –beginner classes for children 6 months of age to 4 years old. An adult must accompany each child in the water during this class.

— Level I & II – beginner classes for children ages 4 and up

— Level III & IV – intermediate classes for children

— Adult classes – for adults of all ages

All classes are taught by certificated American Red Cross instructors.

Late registration will begin on Monday, Sept. 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Biloxi Natatorium and will continue weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the fall until all classes are full.

The cost for the two week session is $30 for each Biloxi resident and $40 for each non-Biloxi resident. Registration must be done in person.
