Biloxi to hold hearing on proposed new ward lines

The Biloxi City Council has set a May 27 public hearing for the public to comment on the proposed new ward lines for the city. The hearing will be held at 3 p.m. at City Hall.

The new lines, based on the 2000 Census, would be used for the 2005 municipal elections in Biloxi, if approved by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The new wards reflect a shift in population from east Biloxi to west and north Biloxi. Each ward has about 6,000 residents, and Ward 2 has a minority voting-age population of 55.2 percent.

Copies of the map will be displayed at city facilities, public libraries, and other locations in the next week.
