A total of 70 youngsters ages 7 to 12 have graduated from the 2017 Fire Academy for Kids, a free program supported with generous sponsorship.
The program, divided into two five-day sessions with beginners camp from June 5 to 9 and advanced camp from June 12 to 16, was conducted at the Lopez Quave Public Safety Center and at the nearby West End Hose Company No. 3 Fire Museum.
“The Fire Academy for Kids Camps are designed to increase children’s fire safety and first aid knowledge and to provide them with a better appreciation of firefighters and their often dangerous job,” said Deputy Chief for Fire Prevention Vincent Payne. “Also, throughout the camp, the children are shown the caring attitude of different community, state, and local agencies who work together with us.”
In all, 17 organizations participated with donations, demonstrations or allowed use of their facilities.
Among the supporters: Mississippi Department of Transportation, Department of Marine Resources, American Medical Response, Mississippi State Fire Marshals, Biloxi Police Department, Ocean Springs Fire Department, Nativity BVM School, IP Casino and Resort, Golden Nugget Casino, Treasure Bay Casino, Palace Casino, Hard Rock Casino, Beau Rivage Casino, Sean Shoemake with US. Select Insurance, Kevin Murray with ServPro, Vernon Smith, and the West End Hose No. 3 Fire Museum.
Said Payne: “I want to personally thank everyone for their donations, assistance and support in making this year’s camp a success.”
