Annual Juneteenth celebration takes place this weekend

The City of Biloxi will join the Movers and Shakers Social Club in hosting the annual Juneteenth celebration set to take place this weekend.

The Juneteenth Weekend Celebration, which is free and open to all ages, begins on Friday with a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at the John Henry Beck Park basketball court, 671 Division St. The tournament begins at 5:30 p.m. and is open to ages 14 to 18 and teams of three to five players. There will be cash prizes for first and second-place teams. Teams are limited so those interested should sign up by calling E. J. Bell at 228-365-5714.

On Saturday, celebrations continue with a unity walk/run, vendor booths, and live entertainment. Those interested in participating in the unity walk/run may register for free beginning at 7:30 a.m. with the walk/run to follow at 9 a.m. The first 100 registrants will receive a T-shirt. As for the course, it is two loops from John Henry Beck Park to O’Reily Park.

Then from 3-9 p.m., there will be a Juneteenth Celebration on the Biloxi Town Green, 710 Beach Blvd. The festivities include vendor booths, food booths, a children’s area, and live entertainment by the Unfazed Band from 7 to 9 p.m.

The celebrations wrap up on Sunday with a family day and picnic back at John Henry Beck Park from 1 to 5 p.m.
