Hard freeze warning begins tonight

Weather forecasters are predicting freezing temperatures and high wind gusts tonight and throughout the weekend.

The bitter cold, which is prompting a Hard Freeze Warning and Wind Chill Advisory, may produce breezy temperatures with lows in the teens and highs in the upper thirties to the lower forties.

Tonight, temperatures are forecast to be in the lower twenties with a wind chill as low as 13 degrees. Wind gusts are expected to range from 10 to 30 mph. On Friday, the day’s high is forecast to be 33 degrees with overnight temperatures in the teens and a wind chill as low as 6 degrees. Wind gusts are expected to reach as high as 35 mph.

On Christmas Eve, temperatures will range from the mid-thirties to the lower twenties. Christmas Day is forecast to be a little warmer with highs in the lower forties and lows in the mid-twenties.

The Hard Freeze Warning has led to the opening of two cold-weather shelters: Kenny Fournier Multipurpose Center at 10395 Automall Parkway in D’Iberville, which opens tonight at 5 p.m., and the Salvation Army Center of Hope at 2019 22nd St. in Gulfport which opens at 6 p.m. Both shelters are scheduled to stay open through Christmas.

The Coast Transit Authority will provide transportation to the D’Iberville shelter. Those needing a ride can call the CTA at 228-896-8080.
