MDOT inspection snarls I-110 traffic

Biloxi Police were forced to close access to the I-110 at U.S. 90 earlier today after a draw span inspection by Mississippi Department of Transportation workers backed up northbound motorists to the beachfront.

Police first discovered that MDOT had reduced northbound traffic to one lane mid-morning and were told by MDOT that southbound traffic at the draw would be reduced to one lane this afternoon.

Northbound traffic on I-110 south of the draw has been stalled since 10 a.m.

With the U.S. 90 bridge destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, the I-110 bridge is the only major access across the Bay of Biloxi, save for the two-lane Popp’s Ferry bridge in west Biloxi.

Sgt. Steve Shaw of the Biloxi Police Department said MDOT hoped to have northbound traffic flowing again by 1 p.m. or so, when workers would shift to the southbound lanes.
