Squirrel interrupts downtown power

Electricity to a number of downtown businesses was interrupted for 17 minutes Tuesday morning when a squirrel jumped on a electric transformer on Howard Avenue, where workers are re-positioning poles as part of the reconistruction of the roadway.

Typically, says Gifford Ormes of Mississippi Power’s Biloxi office, lights may blink slightly when something like this happens, but a safety feature designed to protect linemen working in the area automatically shut down the power.

Said Mayor A.J. Holloway: “The power interruption might have caused a slight inconvenience, but this shows that the power company’s safety feature worked.”

And the squirrel? “He actually lived,” Ormes said. “He looked like he was bleeding a little, and I suspect he had a pretty big headache.”
