Storm shelters will open Sunday at 6 p.m.

North Bay Elementary School, off Popp’s Ferry Road in Biloxi, will serve as one of nine storm shelters opening to the public Sunday at 6 p.m. to provide residents refuge from Hurricane Gustav.

The locations of the nine shelters:

—Saucier Elementary School, 24052 First St., Saucier

—West Wortham K-8 School, 20199 West Wortham, Saucier

—North Woolmarket K-8 School, 16237 Old Woolmarket Road, Biloxi

—D’Iberville High School, 3320 Warrior Drive, D’Iberville

—Gulfport Central Elementary School, 1043 Pass Road, Gulfport


—Harrison Central High School, 15600 School Road, Gulfport (will offer pet shelter on school grounds for pets in carriers.)

—Harrison Central Elementary School, 15451 Dedeaux Road, Gulfport

—Lizana Elementary School, 15341 Lizana School Road, north of Gulfport

—North Bay Elementary School, 1825 Popps Ferry Road, Biloxi.

What you should bring to a shelter

Water: One gallon of water per person, per day.

Food: Non-perishable food that needs little or no cooking, such as ready-to-eat meats, fruits, vegetables, and canned juices. Also recommended are high energy foods such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, trail mix and other snack foods. Bring any specialty foods required, such as for diabetics, people on low salt or liquid diets, and baby food and formula. Bring a manual can opener, and eating and drinking utensils, including paper plates. Bring a portable ice chest with ice.

Clothing and bedding: Study shoes, rain gear and one complete change of clothing. Also, a sleeping bag, blanket and pillow. For an elderly person, bring a cot. Shelters do not provide cots.

Personal items: Washcloth, small towel, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, tampons, paper towels, toilet paper and towelettes.

Medications, first-aid supplies: Medications, clearly marked with your name, dosage, type of medication and prescribing physician. You must be able to take all medications without assistance. Also bring a first-aid kit in a waterproof box.

Baby supplies: Baby clothes, diapers, formula, bottles, nipples, food and blankets.

Important papers: Names and addresses for your doctors and your nearest relative not living in your area. Bring identification and valuable papers.

Miscellaneous: Games, cards, toys, battery-powered radios, flashlights (no candles or lanterns), batteries and other reasonable items you may need. Please bathe and eat before you leave home. Register immediately upon entering the shelter. Obey shelter rules. Keep the building safe and sanitary.

Items not allowed: You may not bring to the shelter any pets, alcoholic drinks or weapons. A separate shelter will be available for pets.
