Preserving the past,
educating the future
The fire museum is a center for the preservation of the tools and equipment of firefighting through the years, as well as an educational fire prevention center for children.
It is located in a former fire house – originally built in 1937 – that has been returned to its original appearance. The museum depicts the 120-year history of the Biloxi Fire Department from its organization on Sept. 19, 1883, through its years as a completely volunteer group, to a full-paid fire department.
The emphasis of the museum is on preservation of equipment rather than restoration. An 1880s hose cart, 1908 American LaFrance steam fire engine, and a 1923 American LaFrance chain-driven fire engine are displayed much as they appeared when taken off "the fire line".
Also displayed are many items of the early fire department, including two of the five original fire bells used in the city. Also included are helmets, trumpets, and a tribute to Biloxi's three fallen firefighters.
Many historical photographs are exhibited that are unique to the history of Biloxi, including the Firemen's Day parades. More historical and educational exhibits are planned for the future.
